This Day In History

Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

12 April 1944

 R.C.A.F. Funtingten, Essex, England

Today was a "duff" day, and the pilots were obliged to spend their time at dispersal reading Intelligence Reports and gaining practice on re-arming Typhoons. In the evening our officers' softball team played their first game of a newly formed league and severely trounced their own groundcrew to the tune of 16 - 6.

Early in the afternoon F/L D.J. Moffatt arrived at dispersal. He is our new M.O. (1)  The "Doc" substituted for the C.O. in the last half of the ballgame, while he prepared his epoch making speech for a debate which was held at the Camp Cinema right after the ballgame. The subject of the debate was "Resolved that a reign of terror should be carried out in Germany after the success of the Invasion". According to popular vote the decision was given to S/L Beethby and his partner, who spoke in the affirmation. Learned today that the tire found off Beachy head, belonged to a Mustang & not a Typhoon as previously thought. We generally hope that Paul is all right, but one never knows.
