This Day In History

Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

15 April 1944

 R.C.A.F. Funtingten, Essex, England

The weather was bad, so very little flying was done. In the afternoon, an attempt was made to do some air to sea firing with F/O Hewson & Sgt Large in the Auster dropping Aluminum Sea Markers, three miles off-shore from Littlehampton. Low clouds made it necessary to cancel the Exercise for awhile, so a fresh start was made in late afternoon, and 500 rounds of 20mm were fired. F/O's Hewson & Moen dropped the Sea Markers. Sometime during the day, a hole was torn in the underside of "Buster", but no explanation could be found. Needless to say, Hewie & Mac took quite a kidding over it. F/O Brown borrowed 438's Auster & flew F/O Burton to Gravesend for his 48. Weather closed in & Ray was unable to return. F/O Laycock flew to West-Hampnstt at noon to test a Typhoon. F/O Babe Swingler flew to Merston South for the same purpose. The boys got a bee in their bonnet about naming our aircraft after Al Capp "Dogpatch" characters i.e., Fearless Fosdick, Stone-face, Silent Yokum etc.
