Good weather
all day making life under canvas more enjoyable. The officers of
439 Squadron played a softball game against the airmen of 438
Squadron, the latter not having lost a game this season. This
grudge game ended in a tie with each team gaining 11 points. A new
Typhoon aircraft MN401 was received today from Redhill. Ops trip
carried out at 0910 hrs. with 440 Squadron. Sixteen aircraft with
2 x 500 lb bombs each, to bomb Noball No. 59 a few miles south of
Abbeville. It was a long trip (1:45), so we landed at Tangmore
& refuelled. Quite a few direct hits were scored &
aircraft returned to base at 11:55 hrs. Another Ops trip carried
out this afternoon at 14:55 hrs. with all 3 squadrons
participating. Two of our aircraft flown by F/O MacDonald &
P/O Bernhart returned to base before reaching target, so only 22
aircraft took part. The target was a viaduct, 1,000 ft. long near
the town of Bolbec, which is not too far from La Havre. After
completing this dive-bombing, which was very successful, they came
out low-level & full throttle, & shot up everything that
came in their way. There was plenty of flak, but all returned
safely.
