Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron 

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

20 May 1944

 R.A.F. Hutton Cranswick

Cloudy all day. Two vehicles together with extra pilots, Medical Officer, Adjutant and five groundcrews left 16 APC for 143 Airfield. The vehicles were re-fuelled at Latterworth, south of Leicester and proceeded to Northampton where they stopped over for the night. The remaining two aircraft left 16 APC at 1330 hrs landing at 1430 hrs. Operations conducted over a Noball target south of Abbeyville in the morning. Four of our aircraft participated carrying 500 lb. bombs scoring four hits in the target area. Another (four hits) operation was carried out in the afternoon at Gorenfles in co-operation with 440 Squadron. Most of the bombs were in the target.

Details of Sortie or Flight

Ramrod over a Noball target south of Abbeville. Our aircraft dropped 500 lb. bombs scoring hit in the target area, whilst four bombs overshot slightly. Four of our aircraft could not proceed due to failures.

Details of Sortie or Flight

Ramrod at Gorenfles, north-east of Abbeville over a Noball target. Our aircraft proceeded to Tangmere with 440 Squadron where they were briefed and loaded with 500 lb. bombs. The aircraft took off at 16:40 hrs. and returned to Tangmere at 17:45 hrs. and then returning to 143 Airfield at 18:05 hrs. Most of the bombs were in the target area.
