This Day In History

Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

07 June 1944

 R.A.F. Hurn

Scattered cloud in the morning and afternoon and later in the afternoon the sky was totally clouded. The fellows had to scramble out early  this morning for the "do" on at 06:05 hrs. Ten aircraft led by S/L Norsworthy carried 500 lb. bombs except for two which provided fighter cover. The bombs dropped on a small cross road south of Caen, in France, entirely blocked the main road and the ensuing straffing blitzed several trucks and tanks. At 10:30 hrs. we had another show on which eight aircraft took part, led by Winco Hillock and Winco Judd was his No. 2.

Since Judd's machine was badly hit by flak so that he and Red Flight returned to base while Blue Flight bombed vehicles south of Caen with 500 lb. bombs as well as doing some straffing of vehicles, south of Caen. F/O Brown's aircraft was hit by flak.

To finish off the day in good fashion we carried out another operation at 16:50 hrs. Eight aircraft were utilized carrying 500 pounders. They patrolled an area 15 miles south of Caen during which enemy vehicles and armoured cars were attacked, some of which were destroyed. All aircraft returned to base undamaged.

Webmaster's Note: The 541 Form for the month of June 1944 is extremely illegible, and difficult to read, and may entail a trip to Ottawa to get a better copy out of the Directorate of History. Hopefully theirs will more legible.

In the meantime, illegible text is indicated by a series of  question " ? " marks.
