Details of Sortie or Flight

A small pontoon bridge across the Orne River just 2 miles south east of Caen (U.006649) was our target this morning. Seven  aircraft from this Squadron were airborne with 500 lb. bombs fused instantaneous and .025 delay. We crossed the line at Noyers and were immediately fired at by batteries of heavy flak guns. This barrage followed us for the full time we were over enemy territory. We attacked from 6000 ft. east to west and prolonged a good steep dive at an angle of 60 degrees to 3000 ft. The bombing was well concentrated around the target, one burst was observed on the eastern approach. Better results were impeded by an unexpected strong wind. All aircraft returned safely to base.

S/L Norsworthy adopted a new method of attack to try and fox the flak defences. The Squadron went into a shallow dive a mile or two before coming to the target then went into a steep dive. This did confuse the enemy flak posts which were becoming accustomed to our previous method of commencing the dive close to the target area.
