Fairly
good warm weather in the morning with scattered cloud increasing
in density here and over Caen which frustrated any attempt in
carrying out operations. F/O "Porky" Porritt and F/L
Ken Scharff set up a volley ball court in the afternoon for the
use of all Squadron personnel.
Bags of excitement this
afternoon when several Jerry aircraft flew over our Dispersal.
They were entertained with a great reception of flak to the accompaniment
of Spitfires. Our guests retired rather
rapidly, leaving some of their numbers behind. After supper
enemy aircraft again came over our dispersal probably much to
their regret as they were greeted by Ack-Ack, and chased by
Spitfires. One was seen coming down, hell bent for election. It
hit the ground a few miles away and exploded.
A Squadron sports
and entertainment committee assembled in the bumph truck where
numerous aspects of recreation were discussed including the
present and future possibilities of Caen, Cruelly and Bayeux.
F/O Johns had quite a time in the evening. He took up his "Typhy"
for a test flight and on returning for a landing, he was given an
overdose of our own flak which gave him a hot reception,
following this our own Spitfires gave him a merry chase. It
appears that the Ack-Ack boys are in dire need of aircraft
recognition as they have fired upon Allied aircraft near our
dispersal on several occasions including a D.C.-3 flying fairly
low which was visibly marked with Allied symbols. However,
"C'est la guerre".
