This Day In History

Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

16 July 1944

 R.C.A.F. Lantheuil

There was fairly low cloud all day which prevented us from carrying out any operations. The airmen challenged the officers to a few games of Volley Ball in the morning and afternoon. Padre Ashford conducted a church service at 14:00 hrs at our dispersal mess. It was quite unique with natural air conditioning and the Padre appreciated the full house. After supper the weather was very clear permitting one operation. Later a heavy mist descended over this district. Enemy aircraft  again flew over our airfield late in the evening inviting a heavy reception from our Ack-Ack.

Details of Sortie or Flight

The nine aircraft of the Squadron were airborne at 19:10 hrs to carry out two separate attacks with 1000 lb. bombs (instantaneous nose and .025 tail fusing). S/L Norsworthy led four other aircraft in an attack at Vagagnes. Results were satisfactory but not easily apparent. F/O Smith and three others attacked a small wood believed to shelter M.T. just north of ???-sur-Orne. Usual  attacks were made in each case from 7000 ft. All bombs were reported in their respective target areas. A small amount of inaccurate flak was encountered . All aircraft returned safely to base.

 Webmasters Note:

(1) The above mission actually appears in the original RAF Form 541 as the second mission for the 15th of July. And there is no mission listed for the 16 July 1944. However, both entries dated the 15th and 16th in the RAF Form 540  allude to only one mission for each of those dates. It is no doubt a clerical error and it is being interpreted  as such.
