19 July 1944

This damned inconsistent weather has again thwarted our efforts towards paving the way to a quicker termination of hostilities. It was too cloudy throughout the day to seriously consider operating, so we sat around twiddling our thumbs waiting for the inevitable. Towards suppertime the sky cleared up partially for a short time resulting in the Operations Room sending an S.O.S. over the Tannoy for pilots to report to that section immediately if not sooner, but it proved to be a false alarm. After that 1 operation was eventually carried out. (1)

Dive Bombing 21:25 21:55

Details of Sortie or Flight

Nine aircraft this evening carried 1000 lb. bombs over the lines to throw another paralyzing punch at Jerry's midriff. Hun forces were known to be causing considerable resistance to our advance at the unfortunate village of La Hague at 096606. At 21: 45 our aircraft attacked the target in a screaming vertical dive 60 to 70 degrees from South to West from a height of 6500 to 200o ft. All bombs were without exception, directly on the target, NOT JUST IN THE TARGET AREA!

A large sheet of blue flame rose up from the village and was followed by tremendous billowing clouds of smoke and dust. No part of the village was left untouched. Some light flak was thrown up from the woods immediately south of the target, but none of it was close. Five minutes later our own forward troops walked into the village unopposed. A congratulatory message from the Army was received by 439 Squadron less than a half hour later. All our aircraft returned safely and in high spirits to base.
