Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

23 July 1944

 R.C.A.F. Lantheuil

Cloudy all day with a bit of rain, hence no operations which were further prevented by unserviceable perimeter track and the runway itself wasn't so hot as a result of continuous inclemency. Padre Ashford had a full house at 1400 hrs. when he conducted a service in a large Marquee at the dispersal mess. All officers attended a mess meeting outdoors near the Officers Mess. S/L Norsworthy handed over his duties as P.M.C. (President Mess Committee) to S/L Lundy, the new S.M.O. (Senior Medical Officer) at 143Wing and F/O Harrison, the Squadron Adjutant , was appointed to the Messing Committee.

Movies were shown in the Airmen's Mess during the afternoon, especially for the benefit of Squadron Airmen who are dispersed away from the main part of the Wing Headquarters. Movies were also shown in the Officer's Mess during the morning. Horseshoe pitching and volley ball playing recommenced at our dispersal when the ground dried up partially. Our Officers participated in assisting to improve the grounds around the Mess and Ante Room after supper. There was a marked difference in appearance when they finally laid down their bludgeons.
