This Day In History

Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

14 August 1944

 R.C.A.F. Lantheuil, France

Heavy ground haze this morning. Scattered cloud all morning, improving in the early afternoon, increasing in density later on, accompanied by a stiff breeze. No operations were carried out by our Squadron, but the pilots were on sixty minutes readiness all day. F/L Ken Scharff and F/O Ray Brown pushed off this morning to bring back a couple more "Typhies". The pipeline at the runway burst this morning making it unserviceable for "ops", for a short while. Another impediment to "ops" was apparently not knowing the true positions of the Army, but this situation should be alleviated tomorrow.

Two new pilots were posted to our Squadron today, F/O J. Roberts J27349 and F/O J.G. Fraser J36722. Jerry is a bit audacious sending a few aircraft over which crossed over and near our dispersal at 2230 hrs. and again at 2359 hrs., but he was not diplomatically received by the flak boys who tossed up proper hell. F/O Harrison, the Squadron Adjutant, celebrated his fifth year in the service today by staying in the seat of industry and writing up the diaries.
