This Day In History
Summary of Events for
No. 439 (CAN) Squadron
as recorded in the 439 Squadron Operations Record Book
for
24 August 1944
R.C.A.F. Lantheuil, France
Again the weather was not good enough for operations. This
afternoon we finally received word about F/O Maurice Laycock. He
was taken to 74 British General Hospital near Bayeux following a
mishap with his motorcycle. This was without a doubt the
greatest sigh of relief recorded in the annals of 439. It
appears that somebody did not over-exert himself in notifying us
of Maurice's whereabouts.
Webmaster's Notes:
(1)
Although the weather might not have been conducive to
operations, none-the-less non -operational flying was
carried out. F/O GW Hewson records in his log book
that he carried out a 30 minute ferry flight test on
Typhoon F3-W from A12 to B9.
He
return trip was in a Piper Cub, tail number unknown, flown
by pilot unknown (F/O) which took 20 minutes to complete.
