Details
of Sortie or Flight
This
show this afternoon was a Ramrod in which nine of our
aircraft carried 500 lb bombs over the front to release on
enemy targets. The target for this particular show was the
Foret de Thelle (a large wood about eight miles southeast
of Gournay) in which the enemy was believed to be
concentrating a number of vehicles. The target was reached
at 18:15 hours and despite an interfering cloud layer
(5/10 at 5,000 feet) the attack was successfully carried
out. The bombs were released at the northern tip of the
wood in a fifty degree dive from 8,000 feet from the east.
The pattern of bomb bursts covered the target area but no
satisfying results were observed. No flak was seen
throughout the mission and all aircraft returned to base
from a very uneventful formation flight.
