Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

for

05 September 1944

 R.C.A.F. Amiens / Glisy, France

The weather was duff all day, but the Squadron still remained on readiness, even though the bomb line is not within practical range for Typhoons. W/C Davidson, DSO, DFC, our former Wing leader, who forced landed on 8-5-44 on returning from an operation over Douai, phoned up our Squadron in the morning to let the boys know he was still around. To say that we were surprised, is belittling. It was a real treat to see him and listen to his experiences. He looked like a typical Frenchman with his beret and civvy suit, not to mention his old pipe.

Apparently, he had been working for the French Underground Movement during which time he was with a German outfit that thought he was a very devout collaborator. He had access to the Buzz Bomb launching sites, and other important German positions. It was quite a joke to hear that Jerry wanted him to work on their flak defences, the obvious retort from our gang was " I wonder why the flak was so accurate." All in all, it was marvellous having our Wing Leader back.
