This Day In History

Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book Form 540

for

10 October 1944

 B.78 Eindhoven, Holland

Cloud in the morning which broke up towards lunch but closed in this afternoon. The highlight of today was the surprise landing of His Majesty, the King, King George VI and field marshal Montgomery at our aerodrome by Dakota. But they spent little time and hurriedly passed the Guard of Honour and crowded road in a jeep. We have now officially received word of the 7th Victory Loan campaign.

For the first time overseas (Continent) we have had advice that ground crew may be granted leave consisting of seven days and two days travelling time, which may be taken in France, Belgium and Holland. But Paris remains out of bounds. This news is gratifying more so because transport is being organized to Brussels.

Again no operations today! A signal came through from 2nd TAF Headquarters posting A/F/L A.E. Monson from our Squadron to 440 Squadron effective (the-same-date) 8-10-44 and granting him the rank of acting Squadron Leader effective the same date. It's a good break for him and we were glad to hear the good news as he did a good job with our Squadron.
