Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

05 November 1944

 B-78 Holland

Cloudy in the morning, breaking up after lunch but cloud lingered around the horizon, late in the afternoon it cleared up with a bit od gale. At 15:00 hours, the funeral for F/O R.N. MacDonald was held in the Rindhoven Municipal Cemetery, Holland. He was the first Canadian to be buried in a Canadian plot. The funeral was simple but impressive which was attended by several pilots and groundcrews. During the service conducted by Padre Ashford, a cool stiff breeze was blowing and a few Typhoons passed overhead, probably returning from operations.

Our operational activities today were nil. A signal was received today stating that a Court of Inquiry is to be held as result of the flying accident that occurred on the 3rd of this month involving F/O R.N. MacDonald's death and damage to civil property as well as injuries sustained by civilians.
