March 1944
R.A.F.
Station Hurn, Bournemouth, England
Today,
F/L Proudlove (1) from
91 Squadron, arrived to conduct the
investigation into the flying accident which resulted in MacTavish's death. Very little flying was carried out, and the
pilots busied themselves in Dispersal, parking on notice boards
and making preparations for the coming move. A test was carried
out by F/L Proudlove in a Hurricane on the ground in which he
determined the result of a Dinghy being released in the cockpit.
It was discovered that the control column was forced sharply
forward in event of that occurrence and that it would be
virtually impossible to get a knife out of a flying boot while
the dinghy was inflated.
Webmaster's Notes: (1) Believed to be D.E.
Proudlove, later to become S/L and CO of 91 Squadron in 1946 and
600 City of
London Squadron in 1949.
