Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

04 April 1944

 R.C.A.F. Funtingten, Essex, England

No flying this morning, but formation recce's carried out this afternoon. We had another very regrettable accident this afternoon, when F/O Andy Clarke's aircraft overturned on landing. He was flying Typhoon "M" in formation with F/O Ivan Smith. Andy was coming into land behind Ivan, when his wings began to drop, apparently stalling & hit the end of the wire runway, went up on his nose and over on his back.

There was a very strong wind, & it appeared that Andy was in Ivan's slip stream. The ambulance was on the job in a hurry, but F/S Sweeny was there first, cut out the door & pulled Andy out. He was immediately taken to the Royal West Sussex Hospital at Chichester. He's in very bad shape, and it is believed that his neck is broken. The aircraft is a complete write-off.

F/L Dadson left in Typhoon "J" for a 3 weeks Flight Leader course at R.A.F. Milfield.
