of a letter addressed to Geale's mother from H.E.D. Ashford - Chaplain

October 5/44
Dear
Mrs. Hewson,
Will
you pleas forgive me for being so very slow in writing you. At first I
delayed because I hoped that we would get word of "Hughie". In
the Squadron he always went by that name. Now I write but still dare to
hope and may it be that as you receive this that you will have
reassuring word from some quarter.
Your
son meant so much to me. One of my first duties on the Wing was to
conduct a funeral for Elton Dixon and Hughie was C.O. of the funeral.
How many funeral I have conducted, all too many! I was so impressed by
this young officer and the confident reverent manner in which he
preformed his duty. As the months passed, I watched him go forth to his
operations in the same confident manner. he knew no fear, was always
inclined to be serious, but I shall never forget the happy smile that
could so easily illuminate that strong face. He never panicked. he never
asked for anything save the opportunity of doing his full duty. He
wanted to finish his tour and return to those he loved so well.
Now
my heart and my sympathy pour out to you. How long the days must seem!
May God be very near you. may He be a light in your darkness and a
strength in your weakness until you meet once again that great gift, you
so freely gave to the RCAF.
Ever
yours,
Geale's
friend,
H.E.D.
