History of Squadron

Belsen Death Camp

Here is an excerpt from the  Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron as compiled by  C20089 F/L M. Harrison  in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book Form 540 dated 05 May  1945 while stationed at B-150 Celle, Germany.

"Several of the lads paid a visit to the horror camp of Belsen and couldn't eat their supper when they got back. The place stinks ! You see many scarecrows walking around. The women have lost all modesty insofar as ablutions and lavatory habits are concerned. You see many walking around talking to themselves, some smiling, some weeping, others expressionless.

Then there were the large graves with fleshless bodies still exposed to the elements. According to the officer who took the party around, there are still approximately 140 dying each day. The newspapers have not been exaggerating on the atrocities in that camp."
