History of Squadron

Some Statistics

439's finest take time out to pose for the camera. Although some of the faces are unidentified, I am hoping some of my more learned friends wiil beable to ID them. Photo from the collection of Kingsley Ackland and is provided courtesy of Brian Ackland Copyright ©2005

The Typhoon wing remained at Celle for three weeks after V-E Day, then it moved up to Flensburg, just below the Danish border. Flying training, sports and movies filled in the time of "no ops no frat, just waiting for repat". Late in June No. 439 began to break up as old-timers departed, homeward bound, and new personnel were posted in. Finally on 22 August 1945, the pilots flew their Tiffies back to England and four days later the Squadron officially disbanded. "We have had a good squadron, indeed a happy one with high morale; and we hope the job we did equaled that done by other fighter-bomber squadrons."

Lest we forget
