Flight Lieutenant Norval Edward Pollock

Royal Canadian Air Force

Died on 21-Mar-1944 when his Hurricane LE 972 had a mid air collision with an American Thunderbolt while based at Ayr, Scotland, training for war.

The following entry is from 439's War Operations Record Book (Form 540): This afternoon at approximately 1600 hours we had another very regrettable accident. F/L N.E. Pollock (J/14314) and F/O Hewson were dog-fighting when they were intercepted by 2 Thunderbolts in pansy formation. According to F/O Hewson, F/L Pollock straightened out his aircraft (972), only to see a Thunderbolt taking a cut at him. The Thunderbolt apparently didn't break in time and cut about half of "Norv's" starboard wing off. This happened at about 1500 feet. Norv went into a spin, came out of it and then spun again. His aircraft exploded and burned after crashing about 2 miles east of the airport.
