Mark II Sabres

19112 Engine cut-out and the aircraft crashed into The Wash on 8 July 1952. Pilot, F/O Al Seitz ejected safely. Author and Sabre historian Duncan  Curtis informs me that the loss of 19112 was down to a flameout at 30,000 feet in a 4-ship formation. Seitz was no.3. A number of relight attempts were unsuccessful and the pilot noted throttle restriction; failure of the main fuel system was the obscure cause, but the restriction points to other likely culprits. 19187 Crashed into the sea on 1 July 1952 due to fuel exhaustion. Author and Sabre historian Duncan  Curtis informs me that 19187 was abandoned 10 miles East of Flamborough Head, but no trace of pilot or aircraft was found; the pilot was blamed for allowing fuel to become critically low before calling an emergency. It is thought that he may have inadvertently flown a reciprocal heading away from base during the homing exercise. Source  Duncan's F-86 Sabre Webpage.
