One
of the Squadron's first duties after arriving at Eindhoven was to make
fighter sweeps and defensive patrols over the Nijmegen area where the
Germans were trying to destroy the bridges which had fallen into Allied
hands.
These sorties led to the first encounters with the Luftwaffe; in one
engagement at dusk F/O J.H. Stitt destroyed a JU88 in flames and P/O W.A.
Gray damaged an FW190. Gray was lost the nest day when flak caused his
typhoon to crash.
