Operation Bodenplatte

A desperate attempt by the German Air Force to stop the incessant attacks by the RCAF. Only three of 439's aircraft were caught in the air attack; one was destroyed and  one damaged, and one was shot down.

The Nazi attack on the airfield inflicted considerable damage to aircraft buildings and stores, but the casualties fortunately were relatively light. No. 439 had five of its personnel wounded, one of than being F/L H.P.V. Massey, the intelligence officer. Flak damage in the last days of December had reduced the squadron's normal complement of 18 Typhoons to only nine, two of which were temporarily unserviceable.
