Feb 1944 - F/O Laycock in Hurricane 568 ran into F/O Moen in
Hurricane 577 while they were doing Section tactics. Moen's
starboard elevator was half torn off and the rudder was one
third shot. There was a foot knocked off each blade of
Laycock's aircraft and they were splintered up to the hub.
They both managed to get back to the aerodrome, and it
really took smart flying to do it. |

Note: You
might find it strange that 439 Squadron were flying
fairly new Hurricane models XII and
XII-A while in training in Canada as No. 123 Squadron in
1943, and then end up flying vintage Hurricane Mark IVs
in a combat zone early in 1944. The explanation is that at this point in the war, there was a severe
shortage of aircraft, and the Squadron elected to fly
these relics while awaiting the delivery of their new
Typhoons.
